Britain and America have signed a important trade agreement that will ensure zero duties on UK drug products entering the American market.
Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that import taxes on these crucial goods will stay at nothing for a timeframe of three years.
This agreement comes after earlier warnings to significantly raise import taxes on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed as high as 100%.
"This agreement between the UK strengthens the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a statement declared.
Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the UK's most significant exports to the America, which is by far the primary market for leading UK drugmakers.
Export figures show that in the 12 months prior to last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products totaling over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure made up nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that span.
"This guarantee protects employment, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to emerge as a global hub for medical research," a minister remarked.
The deal includes several notable changes from the United Kingdom:
This agreement follows a long-running dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.
These tensions were intensified by assertions that US consumers were charged several times more for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.
Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward American operations.
The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its overall budget over the last ten years.
