Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
